Making amedments to the video

After the first time editing we began to cut down some of the shots that we didn't think worked cutting out half of the video as most of it was blank spaces the two and a half minutes we do have is full of narrative and performance, we discussed doing the performance again as we don't feel that is engaging enough for the audience also we may need to reedit as we feel that some of the shots are too long as the pretender has a very fast beat and the video must be cut to the beat we will continue to edit so that the video feels faster and more engaging.

Editing the clips

Today we began cutting both the narrative clips and the performance clips together to create our music video but before we did that we had to go through each individual piece of footage to determine which shots were good and which shots we could get rid of, we elected to get rid of all of the music studio filming as we didn't think it looked professional enough and decided to use the drama studio performance instead.

By the time we had finished editing the clips we liked to a standard that we were proud of we had about a half of the music video we will have to get more shots so that we can fill up the music video until it has been done to a standard that we are happy with.

Band logo's (re-edited)

This was the original logo that we created the background was rather plain so i decided to edit it but the feedback i got was that the lightening bolt didn't suit the genre of our band
i then decided to add an american bald eagle to the background as our band is american and they are very patriotic but i decided that this didn't work either

i finally decided that that removing the eagle altogether looked good as the blue background suited our bands color scheme

Editing the logo

This is the original logo for our band i felt that the background was too plain though so decided to make my own interpretation of it with a better background.

This is the results of my editing i have changed the background to a dark grey with a lightening bolt in the background which i have coloured blue i think it is superior to the original logo as it looks better than the original

Digipak rough draft

This is a rough draft of what i want my digipak too look like when it is eventually made the albums front image will depict all of the band members with their backs to the camera walking down an empty motorway during or after a rainstorm the two guitarists will be carrying the guitars on their backs while the drummer and the lead singer will have drum sticks and a mic in their back pockets to emphasise the roles they play in the band.

the back cover will depict a puddle with the albums songs names placed inside the puddle the colour scheme for the whole album will probably be blacks blues whites and greys so i could probably get all of these colours from photos.

The booklet of my digipak draws more from the name of our band as it will be an image of the band playing their instruments in front a police line up style hight thing this relates to our bands name as it is relates to the the liberty part of our bands title as when people think of police they think of liberty and justice.

the inside image goes back to the theme of the album as it is a close up image of the band members walking through a puddle this links to the rest of the digipak.

The two CDs will be the opposites of each other with one being black with white writing and the other white with black writing both CDs will have songs on them the CD with white writing and a black background will be the bonus CD.

Song choice survey feedback

This is are survey in which we asked people which song we should do for our music video. We put the song in the order of the artists that sang the songs. We are using this as a basis for what song our band should do.

Notes on the culture industry

Adorno and Horkheimer were two men who developed this definition of the Cultural Industry with their joint theory. They stated that the Cultural industry was just like any industry in the world, a machine that goes through the same process and at the end of the stages is the final piece, a product to sell to the mass market.

They imply that artist is now seen as products; everything is controlled to make them this product to sell to the mass market. The public will love this artist and buy their music, trend or products to do with the artist. And in result, for the creators to all make money.  Everything in the cultural industry is controlled.

A good example of this is the X factor that each year creates an artist to their liking and unleashes it on the mass market too make as much money as possible for the record label that they have been signed to.

De-comodification of the music industry

Commodity- A commodity is something that can be brought and sold

The music industry is in crisis as with the changing of technology from CDs to digital the commodity that is the music industry has begun to decline at a rapid rate due to things such as illegal download sites and torrent sites, YouTube and the fact that audiences don't have to buy CDs anymore they can just download it straight to their phones means that the industry is losing money.

Jeremy Gilbert stated that: "A commodity always depends on its status and value. On its relative scarcity. Once the reproduction and distribution of the commodity become effectively free, then it loses its value and status."

This is what is happening to the music industry as with digital technology there is an unlimited supply of albums meaning that audiences don't need to buy the album immediately as it will always be available to them via iTunes, also illegal download sites make it free to download albums at the same quality as the versions brought online meaning that many members of an audience will see it as an easier cheaper alternative to buying the CD or downloading it from ITunes.

Technical Codes

Mise-En-Scene:
In the alternative rock genre of music bands such as muse and the killers appear to be wearing smart-casual clothing, which seems to be quite popular within this genre. The lighting appears to reflect the mood of the song and the music video for example during a sad song the lighting will be low but if it is an upbeat and happy song the lighting will be bright.

Camera Angles:
The camera angles used in alternative rock videos are used as follows: High angle shots are used to establish the setting of the video, There are constant close ups of both members of band and their instruments, Group shot show the bands in their entirety, Low angle shots capture the lead singers and allow them to dominate the screens,Mid shots are used to good effect to show detailed movements of people in the video and Long shots are used to capture an overall image of the narrative of the video.

Editing:
Editing in alternative rock videos is synchronous with the beat and mood of the song for example if the song is angry the editing will be fast and aggressive to match the tempo of the video whereas if the video is sad the speed of the editing is slow fading will probably be used if the music video has a slow tempo.

Band name survey

This is a survey of an alternative rock band name we took to this survey as we could not decide which name we should pick so we took the names to 21 people to decide for us. As the survey shows the overwhelming vote was for cold liberty with intermission coming second so because of that our new alternative rock band is called Cold liberty.

Major VS. Independent

In this day and age the music industry is dominated by three large conglomerates they are; The universal music group, Sony BMG and Warner music group. there are also several independent record labels that do not posses as much money as the major. The definition of mainstream is the ideas, attitudes, or activities that are shared by most people and regarded as normal or conventional. Therefore, this can be related to the music industry in different ways.
Major

The Universal Music Group:
The Universal music group (UMG) is the largest is one of the largest music corporations in the world, a subsidiary of  Universal studios in America, in its early days it was known as universal records and was seen as an unimportant subsidiary of universal picture group, who at which time where the most successful movie studio in Hollywood. Some of the artists signed with universal or their subsidiaries these include: Kanye West, 50 Cent, Mariah Carey and Gwen Stefani

Sony BMG:
Sony BMG was founded on March 3rd 2004, it was a joint venture between the Sony Corporation of America and Bertelsmann AG and held a 25% stake in the music market. They have offices in more than 30 countries

Independent

Dancing Turtle Records:
Dancing Turtle Records is a London based independent record label set up in 2005. Their releases have a strong leaning towards the genres of indie folk, electronica, experimental, downtempo and world music.
The label has developed and released music from a number of artists from Europe, and as far afield as Japan, West Papua and Brazil, under the banner "music acts without prejudice".The label has raised funds and awareness for human rights charities and other causes.
The label is part of the Dancing Turtle Group; this also incorporates the Dancing Turtle Media and Dancing Turtle Films divisions.

Lex Records:
Lex has a varied musical output. The label is not focused on one particular genre (although most releases are alternative hip hopalternative rock or electronica) and instead focusses on working with a small group of individual artists, supporting their work. As a result of the small roster, Lex has a low volume of releases, rarely releasing more than three albums annually.

Lex albums are often collaborations between members of the label roster and musicians from elsewhere. These collaborative groups includeDanger Mouse with MF Doom as Danger DoomBoom Bip with Gruff Rhys as Neon NeonJneiro Jarel with Khujo Goodie as Willie Isz, and Jneiro Jarel with MF Doom as JJ DOOM. Forthcoming releases include a new album from Neon Neon and the debut album from Nevermen.

Postmodernism

Postmodernism is the term created in the 20th centaury its defined in dictionaries as "A concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism, which represents a departure from modernism and is characterized by the self-conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media, and a general distrust of theories."

that claims that we are all constantly immersed in media all the time meaning that the distinction between real life and the media has become blurred or entirely invisible to us so we cannot tell the difference between things such as real experiences and simulations of them. The media is the new reality.

Postmodern media rejects the idea that any media text or product is of any greater value than any other. All judgments are merely opinion, everything deserves and culture "eats itself" as there is nothing new to distribute or produce as it has all been done before.

Jay-Z analysis

Mise-en-scene

The setting of Jay Z's 99 problems portrays the ghetto of Brooklyn, New York where Jay Z grew up and illustrates the struggles that Jay-Z had to go through during his career in order to reach the top of the music industry.

Editing:

Editing in this video is fast paced to keep up with the fast paced beat of the song using speed on some shots so the images occasionally move so fast they seem to be impossible to understand on the first viewing, creates an incentive for the viewer to want to see the clip again. Using fast cuts also add to the quick pace of the music video. A black and white filter is used throughout the music video, creating a dramatic effect and also allows the audience to focus on the shapes, perspectives and lighting of the music video instead.

Camera Angles:

The music video explores a range of different camera work, two shots to create a personal connection with Jay Z  Close ups to display certain aspects in the video such as the guns the violence and the vouristic  women, establishing shots to provide the audience with a view of the scene areas which Jay Z grew up in, many shots play with perspective, many of the shots in the video are unsteady and create a sense of urgency and excitement, therefore matching the fast pace of the beat. The angles are inventive as some shots are taken through mirror reflections and at low tilts thus create space and interaction. With so much going on in the videos it keeps the various audience engaged.

History of the music video

A music video is a piece of film used to accompany a song, modern music videos are usually used as a way to promote an artists.

The earliest recorded music video was created by blues singer, Bessie Smith used in the song Saint Louis blues in 1929 it was unlike any modern day music videos as it had no narrative and featured a dramatised performance of the song.

In 1966 the clip of Bob Dylan performing Subterranean Homesick Blues  filmed by D A Pennebaker was much used. The clip's ironic portrayal of a performance and the seemingly random inclusion of  celebrity Allen Ginsberg  in a non-performing role also became mainstays of the form. In the Video we see Ginsberg holding up cards with selected lyrics written on the cards The clip has been much imitated over the last few decades.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen in 1975 is considered the beginning of the music video era and set the template for the modern music video, it was the first ever music video to use advanced visual effects such as fade ins/outs, zooms, close ups, cross fading and more.
